40 – 正 – You Are Correct

This month we are going to look at the character 正 which means correct or proper. This character is pronounced 정 (“Jeong”) in Korean and can be found in many common Korean words. Knowing the meaning of this character will help you learn these words.

For example, the Korean word 정말 (正- “Jeong-mal”) means real, or the truth. The first character 正 (정 – “Jeong”) means correct or proper. The second syllable 말 (“mal”) is not hanja – it is a native Korean word that means words or talk. When combined the word literally means “correct-talk”, or truth.

 

The word 부정 (不正) means corrupt, illegal, or dishonest. The first character 不 (부 – “Bu”) means ‘not’. The second character 正 (정 – “Jeong”) means correct or proper. Together they literally means ‘not-right’.

 

The word 정답 (正答) means ‘right answer’. The first character 正 (정 – “Jeong”) means correct or proper. The second character 答 (답 – “Dap”) means answer. So together it means ‘correct-answer’.

 

Finally, the word 정확(正確 – “Jeong-Hwak”) means accurate, correct, exact, or precise. The first character 正 (정 – “Going”) means correct or proper, and the second character 確 (확 – “Hwak”) means certain.

 

Here are some other common words with the character 正 (정 – “Jeong”) in them:

자정 (子正 – “Ja-Jeong”): Midnight

정면 (正面 – “Jeong-Myeong”): Front, facade

정문 (正門 – “Jeong-Mun”): Front gate, main gate, main entrance

정반대 (正反對 – “Jeong-Ban-Dae”): The complete opposite (of)

정상적 (正常的 – “Jeong-Sang-Jeok”): Normal

정식 (正式 – “Jeong-Shik”): Formally, properly, legal, official

정오 (正午 – “Jeong-Oh”): Noon, midday, twelve in the afternoon

정장 (正裝 – “Jeong-Jang”): Suit, full dress, formal dress

정직하다 (正直 – “Jeong-Jik Ha-da”): Honest, truthful, frank
